DOA
By M. Konczewski
This book arrived with everything stacked against it. "The Twin Dilemma" was the first full story featuring the 6th Doctor, who would soon be reviled as the least favorite of all Doctors. It didn't help that TTD is an awful story, full of both unpleasant characters, annoying twins, and giant slugs.
The novelization, instead of toning down the 6th Doctor's unpleasant new persona, decides to jack it up a notch and make him even more irritating. Not one of the Doctor's shining moments.

The reader's dilemma
By TAFESA Mount Gambier
"The Doctor's dilemma was to tell or not to tell".

It might have been better if Eric Saward had chosen not to tell his version of The Twin Dilemma; it is woeful, one of the worst novelisations of the original run of stories. To be fair, Eric was also working from one of the worst (if not the worst) stories in Who history (albeit one he oversaw in his role as script-editor), a garish, kaleidoscopic nightmare, but this heavy handed re-write and editing of the original script does little if anything to improve the televised version. It's hard at times to tell if Saward is attempting a parody of the absurdities and frailties of the Twin Dilemma or just express his obvious contempt of the whole Colin Baker incarnation of the Doctor as overseen by John Nathan-Turner. The book comes across as a sot of sub-Douglas Adams sci-fi satire where, with few exceptions (the Masters & Johnson gag and the Senile 9 asides for example) the gags fall terribly flat. Instead we are treated (!) to Saward's usual tropes of sex and violence, with suicide and alcoholism thrown in for good measure, the sort of concepts the New Adventures handled in a far more adult and subtle way.

Before turning to television, Eric Saward had once been a farmer. Maybe this explains why this novel comes across like a "lecherous stallion." There's very little heroic about it. Just petty, childish cynicism. Children's book should be more grown up than this and Doctor Who should be better. The biggest dilemma is how it ever got made...

The only dilemma is whether to buy this one...

Following their adventure on Androzani, the Doctor saved Peri by giving her the only dose of the cure to the poison that had infected them both. The Doctor has regenerated again - and this time "it feels different". Just how different is refelcted in the Doctor's bizarre manic-depressive behaviour, trying to strangle Peri at one moment and then seeking out a solitary planet to become a hermit the next. But this planet is as unpopulated as it seems, and there is one strand of a complex plot to conquer the universe just outside...
Considered by many to be the worst ever Doctor Who TV serial, this is adapted by then-Script Editor Eric Saward. If you have read other Who reviews by me, you will know that I believe that Mr. Saward did a poor job as Script Editor and lowered the standards of the program.
Together, a bad story and someone who really didn't "get" Doctor Who come together to give us a book that really only should ever be purchased by Doctor Who completists. I think this is the only Doctor Who I will ever award just 1 star.
Avoid, avoid, avoid!
