A rich and heavy feast

I read this story many years ago. l loved it then and love it now. Every sentence is a treat in itself. The characters so thoroughly developed in each short section that we know and understand them immediately. The language is flowery, poetic in an old-fashioned way that reminds me of how one single sentence has the power to bring tears or laughter. One reads Thomas Wolfe for the experience of the writing itself, the rich descriptions, the thorough characterizations. It is a feast for the soul.

Great little-known Wolfe story

This is a chunk of what was always referred to by Wolfe as "the manuscript" -- the never ending stack of pages that became "Look Homeward, Angel" and "Of Time and the River." This is an amplification of a brief episode in "Angel-" the death of Eugene's younger brother. It has the characteristic Wolfe style and a touching story at it's center. One might look at it as one of those "deleted scenes" in a DVD extra.

Greatness!

What a great book! Each section is incredible, starting with the piece told from the point of view of 'the lost boy' himself. Thomas Wolfe was such a great writer. I had no patience with Look Homeward, Angel, but I love this novella.
