The beginning of the sweeping Aubrey-Maturin series. "The best sea story I have ever read."—Sir Francis Chichester
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, R.N., and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against a thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of a life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the roar of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

Amazon.com Review
The opening salvo of the Aubrey-Maturin epic, in which the surgeon introduces himself to the captain by driving an elbow into his ribs during a chamber-music recital. Fortunately for millions of readers, the two quickly make up. Then they commence one of the great literary voyages of our century, set against an immaculately-detailed backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. This is the place to start--and in all likelihood, you won't be able to stop.
From Library Journal
These two selections represent a series of abridged audiobook versions of O'Brian's works narrated by Robert Hardy, that most blustery and unstudied of British actors. Hardy reads the stories cold, but here it works. He uses his voice to evoke everything from brutality to mannered drawing-room excesses to the physical threat of a storm at sea. The stories are superb depictions of life on a British man-of-war and incorporate O'Brian's exquisitely accurate historical detail (Testimonies, Audio Reviews, LJ 7/96). The friendship of protagonists Capt. Jack Aubrey and ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin plays out against an expanse of ocean, from India to the Atlantic, with a full complement of battles and adventures at sea for devotees of naval fiction. Highly recommended.?Mark Pumphrey, Polk Cty. P.L., Columbus, NC

Review
'...full of the energy that comes from a writer having struck a vein... Patrick O'Brian is unquestionably the Homer of the Napoleonic wars.' James Hamilton- Paterson 'You are in for the treat of your lives. Thank God for Patrick O'Brian: his genius illuminates the literature of the English language, and lightens the lives of those who read him.' Kevin Myers, Irish Times 'In a highly competitive field it goes straight to the top. A real first-rater.' Mary Renault 'I never enjoyed a novel about the sea more. It is not only that the author describes the handling of a ship of 1800 with an accuracy that is as comprehensible as it is detailed, a remarkable feat in itself. Mr O'Brian's three chief characters are drawn with no less depth of sympathy than the vessels he describes, a rare achievement save in the greatest writers of this genre. It deserves the widest readership.' Irish Times

I can't give a better recommendation than that
By Rob Skrobola
For my commentary on this book, I'll reference the tags that Amazon asks you to choose between for the plot, mood, pace, and characters. Patrick O'Brian's work, and 'Master and Commander' in particular, is not served well by these kinds of choices. There are surprising plot elements, and ones that are foreshadowed long in advance. There are parts of the book that are light-hearted and hopeful, and parts that are very dark. The pace is slow as a walk on the island of Mahon, and fast as the seconds on the deck of an enemy ship.
In other words, O'Brian writes life. I can't give a better recommendation than that. Nailing him down as a sea-story guy or a history guy is a mistake. He writes friendships and hatred, hope and fear, and all the reasons and ways that we suffer and rejoice in little events and big. Read it.

Painfully accurate to the point of boredom
By Amazon Customer
I am a very big fan of historical fiction Bernard Cornwell is my favorite author I was hoping in O'Brian's series to find a similar storyteller
In my opinion that is not the case I would not doubt that this book is very accurate but to me it's boring as well .
A ponderous, very detailed and extremely accurate account of how sailors in the Royal Navy lived the 1800s. If you are expecting the action and adventure that was present in the movie based on this book it will take a while to get to that .
Personally I could not get that far into the book it is a slow read I'm sure it will reward those that will delve into it and thus I did not give it a terrible review but a so-so one . It's just my opinion others make very much enjoy this .

O'Brian is much better than many others
By Charles Kovacs
It is rather a challenge to give less than five starts to a book written by such a famous and successful author. Nevertheless, I think four is a justified rating. O'Brian has been lauded as the Jane Austen of naval fiction and this is clearly a tribute to his literary skills. However, many readers may not find Jane Austen all that commendable for a reading experience, even if they are familiar with the England of Jane Austen's period. In a book about naval warfare, this is even more the case.
The author obviously knew all about sailing ships, indeed the plethora of the relevant technical terms is an overkill and probably detracts from readability for anyone not a sailing fanatic. More importantly perhaps, there is far too much of Maturin and too little of Aubrey. The former is an incredibly well learned intellectual surgeon/physician while the latter is the naval officer protagonist of the novel. Aubrey is plausible as a RN officer from 1800, Aubrey is not. He is also a man with some distinctly unattractive characteristics, more of which come to the fore in subsequent volumes. For me, five stars in this genre is C.S. Forester and O'Brian does not match him. All the same, I am planning to read the series, O'Brian is much better than many others.
