David L. Bigler, former director of the Utah Board of State History, is an independent historian whose books on Utah, California, and western American history include Forgotten Kingdom: The Mormon Theocracy in the American West, 1847 1896. Will Bagley, an independent historian of the West, is the author or editor of numerous books, including Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Mountain Meadows Massacre and So Rugged and Mountainous: Blazing the Trails to Oregon and California, 1812 1848.

good history

I found this a fascinating study not only of the 'War" but a history of the Mormons in Utah. much good insight into
the personality of Brigham Young. Little is known about those early years and this book brings to light much of the controversy
surrounding the Mormons, the native Americans, and the U.S. government. Therre may be a little bias here since the authors are
from Utah but it is a must read if you have any interest in the era.

A fresh view

The background given in this volume of how Mormon millennialist thinking shaped the actions of the church leaders distinguishes "The Mormon Rebellion" from other treatments of the Utah War and gives a framework for understanding the events that took place. William P. MacKinnon's "At Sword's Point, Part 1" (2008), a documentary history of the Utah War, divides its coverage almost equally between the federal government and the Mormons. "The Mormon Rebellion," on the other hand, focuses primarily on understanding the Mormon perspective of the world and thereby adds depth to that part of MacKinnon's account. Although Bigler and Bagley mostly lay the blame for the conflict on Mormon theocratic, millennialist views, they acknowledge that the government side had its share of blundering. Additionally, it is well to point out that the beliefs of this period are no longer part of Mormon thought.

This is an excellent book. It is detailed, well written, and historically accurate. I have nothing in my library to compare it to. The topic is one that is usually only briefly covered in larger, more general historical studies. It presents a detailed and exhaustive treatment of the subject while avoiding most of the usual political and religious bias. I have not finished reading the book, so can offer little more at this time. Thus far, I am very pleased with the book.
