Bowdlerized Pepys

This Pepys is the famous, complete, recent edition, of which I have the full set in hardback, eleven volumes, I think. But what if I'm stranded on a Pacific atoll with only my cell phone? Better get an ebook version of the diary. So, kindle store. But somebody has seen fit to edit out many bits from the kindle version. I checked out the first such bit, which happens within sentences of the beginning. The wife is pregnant, then not pregnant. Pepys in hardback says, "she has them again", presumably referring to her period. Kindle says in brackets, she lost the baby. I will delete the entire ebook diary. I do not understand why the publisher sees a necessity to ruin the ebook by such deletions in AD 2012.

This is not Complete

The text here is the bowdlerized 1893 version, widely available for free all over the Internet. The publication date suggests that it is a modern, unexpurgated version. It is not.

Weak annotation and decidedly not complete

This was published in the late 19th century. Its annotation is weak and it is decidedly not "complete" as a significant portion of Pepys' private/romantic life is excised to protect delicate, Victorian sensibilities. That's fine and good, I suppose, unless one wants to learn about the realities of daily life in 17th century London. Sex, as it happened, in particular in that era, seems to have played a more significant role than this edition conveys. Furthermore, English usage and characters need far better explication for a 21st century reader in order to flesh out the historical context.
