Sigrid stood in the center of what had once been the Academy grounds on Alcyone. Now, all that remained were the burned and collapsed remnants of the school and dormitories. If they were in range, they'd pick up the signal. But there was still nothing. Not even the orbital satellites showed any sign of the girls, or survivors for that matter. Whoever had done this had been brutal and thorough.

Cyberpunk, Space Opera, SF Romance

Loved it!
Cyberpunk, space opera, SF Romance--THE GIRLS FROM ALCYONE has it all wrapped up in a sweet little package named Sigrid Novak.
On Sigrid's journey from the little girl who was sold by her parents to a genetically enhanced woman who is as much cybernetic weapon as human, I was right there with her. As she faced hazing and bullying, as she found her strength and confidence, as she fell in love, as she became the most skilled mercenary the universe has ever seen.
Author Cary Caffrey was careful with the feminist overtones, keeping them delicate and natural to the story. Caffrey's penchant for action scenes is matched only by his world-building, which includes vivid fashion and incredible settings.
He also knows how to write a strong, but sympathetic character in Sigrid. Her innocence offsets her dangerous side, reminding me of a space age Sydney Bristow of ALIAS fame. I'm fine with Sigrid killing a platoon of men one minute then sharing a tearful embrace with friends the next.
Well-written and engaging--highly recommended!

Great start for the author and fun action

I enjoyed this book and beleive it was value for money, 99c was great value and part of the reason I give it 4 stars. Many bad reviews have commented on the lesbian overtones and sections and to tell you the truth, I mostly skipped those pages and sure they ended up loving each other so did not see the big problem. It was a bit female centric with few men making any impact as real people to my reading but it is not like they were all lesbians or something.
Ok, the author describes them as gorgeous beauties and that is not surprising considering the reason they are purchased/recruited. The beginning is very good and in many ways typical of any "recruit" training/ military books are often depicted but with the scifi, "enhanced"/upgrades that marks the key points of this book and it's sequel.
Yes, i bought the next book straight away to read it after finishing this one.
So this books is essentially a military sci-fi style book focused around about 30 odd young girls being found and "purchased" (yes, in an Ender's game style) and then being enhanced (aka Blade Runner style but mostly human) and the fallout from the "Conferation" and other mercernary groups fearful that these 30 odd girls being trained/grown/enhanced as assassin/mercs will change the balance of power in the Confederation.
I found some of the critics here amazing in their "putdown" seems they don't read Mathew Reilly and the way his hero is so "superhuman" (Scarecrow) and he is not even enchanced, lol
I found it to be a good fun action book and total value for 99 cents, to me this first book was the better one

Cringe-worthy

I enjoyed the first chapter which is why I bought it, and it is the only believable part of the entire book. I have no idea how old the author is but it feels as if it were written by a young teen (which is perhaps why the first chapter is believable as the characters were young teens at that stage). The moment the lead leaves the academy it goes rapidly down hill. Its almost as if the author has no idea how adults speak, interact or behave. There are so many examples... you are going to a formal dinner to meet your employers, unless your employer is a pimp, hooker ensemble is usually not considered appropriate business attire. The dialogue between Hitomi-san and her friends really made me cringe, just because you are "old" it doesn't mean you gush like an elderly English grandmother (particularly if you are Japanese). The most hilarious part of the book was the elevator scene where the lead who was trained since childhood in military tactics goes to bed after several attacks on her employer. Because that's what you do when you are under constant attack, have a lie down. You don't of course set a watch roster or organise any security protocols, you just go to sleep like its just any other day and then act so surprised when another attack comes. This book was stupid and certainly doesn't deserve the high ratings it has received.
