The beginning of modern America

Schlesinger illuminates the social conflict that arose in the 1880s and `90s. It was a time of turmoil, as agrarian America gave way to a new urban America. The Rise of the City describes and appraises the new social forces emanating from this period of sociological transition, as the economic power and cosmopolitan nature of great urban centers of commerce supplanted the plantations of the South, the family farms of the Midwest, and the cattle ranches of the West as the dominant culture in our country.
The book's central point is that the city became the crucible in which America's yearnings for a more civilized and modern life was nurtured, as its increasingly dense population created challenges in transportation, lighting, safety, and sanitation. Though it admittedly brought crime, vice, and a less wholesome life for children, city life also galvanized inventive thought and fostered innovative approaches to education, literature, science, invention, the fine arts, social reform, public sanitation and leisure time activities.
Schlesinger's assertion that all advances in these areas were catalyzed and developed primarily in urban - not rural - environments is backed up by numerous examples. For instance, the development of electrically-powered labor saving devices liberated women from household routine, which in turn left middle-class urban women with more leisure time and opened the way for their wider participation in the world of education, social reform, and the arts. This freedom from housework also contributed to a revolutionary rise in the number of feminine breadwinners, which doubled from two and a half million in 1880 to over five million in 1900.
Additionally, Schlesinger makes a convincing case that the dire needs of public health agencies to protect city dwellers (where the need was greatest) from disease brought a rational and scientific approach to disease prevention that replaced the old empirical methods. These efforts led to urban public works projects for the construction of water and drainage systems, and public health agency inspection of milk supplies and food. This need to protect America's dense population centers from epidemics also spurred the medical sciences on to discoveries in the causes and serum treatment of many communicable diseases.
The book is organized thematically, beginning with chapters outlining how the end of Reconstruction and the development of the railroad marked the end of our traditional agrarian ways and the beginning of a new breed of commercial farmer in the South and the Great West. These first two chapters provide a transition to Schlesinger's explanation of why America's great urban manufacturing centers were able to lure droves of native country boys and girls - along with immigrants - to their busy streets with the promise of economic opportunity and social fulfillment. Another chapter outlines the challenges confronted by city dwellers, and how their solutions transformed the entire country as each small town imitated the success of the large cities. The rest of the book's thirteen chapters delves into the sociological developments fostered by city life; feminism, education religion, public charity, politics, and leisure.
