From Kirkus Reviews
The truly evil Uncle Barnaby returns to the page in this adaptation from Brammer. The original operetta, now almost 100 years old, has lost some sophistication this time around, but the story still thrills even as the illustrations falter. Barnaby, who has just given Old Mother Hubbard the boot from her shoe for failing to pay rent on time, threatens the Widow Piper with the same fate unless she can convince the vivacious Contrary Mary to wed him. After a series of perfectly despicable acts on the part of Barnaby, the old devil finally gets his comeuppance. Rarely do the illustrations achieve any sort of animation to match the action in the story; instead, they are stiffly posed and muddily reproduced, and none of the characters will take hold in children's imaginations. I thought this could be a good teaching compendium in the classroom
By Eileen Ladewski
The text is disjunct, such that the flow of the storyline is confusing. It reads as though it is a rough translation into English, with awkward sentence structure, and sudden focus shifts between the excessive amount of characters. The cover illustration is pleasing, but misleading. I found all the other pictures to be odd, and definitely not pleasing for children. I thought this could be a good teaching compendium in the classroom, but couldn't even make it all the way through without disgust and disappointment. Went straight to Goodwill.

BROADWAY OPERETTA'S SCRIPT REVIVED!
By Plume45
Don't let any of today's youngsters know that this book exists--they would hoot in derision! Yet this is a luxury edition of the 1903 musical operetta by Victor Herbert, including some music. Accompanied by wonderful illustrations by Victoria Lisi, this volume has preserved the script and even lists the turn-of-the-century cast.
Sugary tale about a stereotyped rich and hateful villain trying to force a sweet young thing to marry him. Many children and even some toys help foil the miser, when he invades the sanctity and threatens the innocence of Toyland itself. The script abounds in terrible puns and a simplistic plot--virtually impossible for kids of the 90's to appreciate.
Toys and dolls plus a kindly toymaker come to the rescue, as the youngsters from Mother Goose Land flee to Toyland to further their dreams and escape their nightmares. The little old Toymaker speaks as the true spirit of Christmas about the importance of bringing joy to young children. Browse this lovely edition whenever you want to return to those ingenuos days of yore--Childhood!

Fanciful and Fun Book in the Tradition of a good Fairy Tale
By White Fang
"Babes In Toyland" is a 10 1/4 inch by 11 1/8 inch 46 page children's picture book. Every other page in the book is a full color, full page illustration using a blend of oil wash and colored pencil. The beautiful illustrations will captivate children of many ages. My favorite picture is the one of Contrary Mary. She stands in her beautiful flower garden wearing a beautiful Victorian red and white dress with a straw hat tied on her head by a contrasting green scarf. You will love this picture as well as all the others. The book has a beautiful full color pictorial cover with a matching dust jacket which will hook the attention of all children. The expressions on the faces of the Master Toymaker and the young boy and young girl on the cover seem to say, "Pick up this book and read it -- you will really enjoy it."
The story is written in the tradition of "The Wizard of Oz" and many other childhood fairy tales and fantasy tales. This story contains all the elements of a great children's fantasy story. You have the villain who is trying to force an innocent girl named Contrary Mary to marry him. You have the Master Toymaker and other characters coming to the aid of the innocent girl. You have the traditional forces of good overpowering the forces of evil and everybody living happily ever after. In this book you have the magical lands of "Mother Goose Land", "Spider Forest" and of course, "Toyland" itself. Another fairy tale inspired incident in this book is the rescue of a moth that was caught in one of the spider's webs in "Spider Forest" by Jane and Alan, two of the main characters in the story. The rescued moth turns into a glowing Fairy Queen who protects the young couple by summoning the good bears of the forest to chase away all the threatening spiders and who form a circle around the kids to protect them through the night. All of these features make an exciting and entertaining book which will be enjoyed by most children. Children will thrill at the thought of Toyland, "a kingdom of childhood and a magical place where toy soldiers march through the streets, where lollipops grow on trees, and the Spirit of Christmas is alive each and every day of the year." You will want to read this fantasy tale to learn how the forces of good overpower the forces of evil.
While this book is a fairy tale type of story full of magic and fantasy, I would like to mention one incident from the story which may be slightly frightening to very young children. Uncle Barnaby, the villain, takes a jar from the Master Toymaker. This jar glowed with an eerie green light and contained the spirits of evil. Uncle Barnaby releases these evil spirits and they give chase to him and the Master Toymaker himself. Just use caution with very young children.
"Babes In Toyland" is a wonderful children's book with beautiful illustrations. There are a few places where the dialogue is a slight bit difficult to follow because of the many different characters.
