Too quick to be anything special...

Really the product description is an accurate portrayal of what happens in this very short story and you can pretty much guess what happens. So yes, it is predictable, but cute. It takes less than 10 minutes to read and is chaste, but there is profanity.

Karli the sister of the best friend is the best character with her dramatic personality and loud and brash way of talking. Alexa is a great best friend who tells Ashley what she needs to hear, not what she wants to hear. Austin,is almost non-existent, but he comes alive at the end. All the action happens in one school day.

What's Meant To Be is too short to contain too much drama, character development or great plot, so if you are looking for that, you won't find it here. The author has talent and I would have enjoyed this story in a longer version.

Too short? Maybe. But cute? Definitely!

I knew by reading other reviews here that the book was going to be short (I finished it in 25 minutes) and it was very much so, but also pretty enjoyable. I liked the Ash (main) character and her friends seemed cool. Ash's crush Austin was interesting too and sounded really cute! This book felt very authentic to a way many a teen would feel in this situation. I quite enjoyed it and would buy more books from this author. Hopefully she will put some out soon!

I read this in school in a period that was 50 minutes long and still had 30 minutes to spare. It's cute and a little cheesy. It's not a long or heavy read. Interesting characters and a thought out plot. It was a tad disappointing in the end but good.

Well, here he is, or to be more accurate, here is the book which brought him this accolade – ‘Her Benny – A Tale of Victorian Liverpool’, by the no-longer (sadly) celebrated million-plus selling author, the Reverend Silas K Hocking.

First, the book. Her Benny, to use its most common title, (the sub-title is used on some editions, omitted on others), is an unapologetically Protestant Christian flavoured tale of two Liverpool waifs, young brother and sister, Benny and Nelly Bates. They are starved and abused and sent out to scrape as best a living as they can: Nelly selling matches, Benny portering at the ferry terminal. But things get so bad, that Benny, after his young fragile sister gets a terrible beating, decides enough is enough, takes whatever provisions he can find, grabs his sister by the hand, and leaves home. It is here I have to stop as more would put this little blurb in spoiler territory. If you are new to the tale, and the flavour appeals, it won’t disappoint, or you may be one of the many, many people who read this a long, long time ago and wish to read it again. Here is your chance.

The author : the Reverend Silas Kitto Hocking was born in Cornwall in 1850. By the time he was an adult he had not taken up the opportunity to work in the family-owned tin-mine but instead became an ordained Methodist minister. It is this ministry which saw the good reverend bang his drum up in the northwest of England, but primarily Liverpool, Southport and Oldham. He was also a published author, some titles doing well, others poorly, and some not in book form ever but were serialisations in various magazines and periodicals. But one book, inspired by the poverty stricken families and waifs of inner city Liverpool of the time (the 1870s), was to make him – and the book (for so many years anyway) famous nationally, and later on, internationally, with the book selling phenomenally well while he was still alive, and with Silas K Hocking becoming the first ever author to reach and surpass the million copies sold in an author’s own lifetime. The good reverend died at the age of 85 in 1935. Interestingly though, he only ever made a total of thirty pounds in author’s fees from Her Benny.

This edition of the book is the 1890 Illustrated Edition. In the author’s own words, he tells the reader in a preface ‘ the publishers’ decided the book needed a new overcoat’, and so here it is – Her Benny – A Tale of Victorian Liverpool – the 1890 De Luxe Illustrated Edition.

Victorian Sob Story - well, yeah....

A very short & sweet review. This is more of an interesting read than a well-written story. I was curious & wanted to check out the 1st book to sell over 1M copies while the writer was alive. Its like a Dicken's tale of Victorian mores with a fairly heavy Christain overtone & as I said, it makes for an interesting read, if for this aspect alone. That is to say, another POV to compare to Dickens with whom most people are familiar. And the illustrations are really worthwhile; sometimes two or more of the same poignant scene are included; and this not only adds to the story, it also adds to the overall Victorian flavour of the little book. Hocking gives the reader insight into the Victorian view of poverty, street urchins & the concept of "pulling yourself up by your boot straps", though in this tale the little blighters do not have that option, being barefoot.

SPOILER Of course, our hero has many (too many) obstacles to overcome before fame & fortune come his way; but, yes, Mary, there is a Santa or at least riches & fame for everyone in this book with a Hollywood ending before there was a H(B)ollywood. I say this not to spoil the tale as I feel one can expect only one ending from this type of story; but, rather to forewarn of the somewhat tediousness of the struggle.

But I still give it 4 stars & recommend it to anyone who enjoys an older, slower tale; especially, one which sold over a million copies in its day.

I am originally from Liverpool and so could really enjoy the book. It was written so well and the history is true. I have bought the book for my Sister and she will enjoy it much as I did. The story is so sad and heart wrenching and at the same time always promising. I am sure that most people would enjoy this story, as it is a story of strength, acceptance and love. When I was growing up my Aunt would visit and she would say to my Grandma if she was complaining about something, "remember Her Benny". We never knew what that meant until I read the book.
It meant things could always be worse than they are.......

The title is the best thing about it...

I apologise for the one star, but zero stars is not an option. The title (well, the name of Carrie Fisher's character's salon in The Blues Brothers) is funny, the book is not. The language is even worse than my own, the "characters" wooden, editing non-evident and if there was a story I missed it. Got it at 0.00 and that was too expensive, although I do admit to finishing it - it is very short..

Northern Lights, you are so right in your review. I have read about 100 books since getting my Kindle, mostly indie authors and never been compelled to leave a negative review. I've sometimes read reviews and wondered if they were being unduly harsh. I can overlook minor typos, spacing issues, even occasional questionable grammar and usage problems. But this story was painful (yes, I am one of those that just has to finish what I start). Thank goodness it was a quick read. Bad writing, bad characterization, bad everything.

Death in the salon

One time short story read, it was Ok. I like the concept but wanted to see a longer story line with more development so I bought the rest. It's interesting how everyone has a preconceived notion of what a story should be, or should read like in their head and through living in their own little subjective mental prison people miss the fun in life. They don't even realize how brainwashed they have been by their parents and fake education system. So have fun everyone who thinks every story should be as long and boring as War and Peace or Beowulf. I'm going to enjoy reading fun little stories and books. Great job!

Be Prepared!

This Flashcard System is an excellent tool all on it's own - hands down. Or in combination with the Study Guide. Comes in an easy to use format, with plenty of information, easy to read headings, in bold or underlined where necessary. Plenty of information on each card, so you have lots of information to draw from as opposed to one or two word answers. If you've missed anything in the material you've already used, you'll review it here. If you're considering using the Flashcard System and Study Guide together, you can feel confident that they go together well, and I would suggest using them together (as opposed to one at a time). All vital subjects are covered here that would be covered on the test and everything is clear and easy to read, with all the most important information honed out for you so you don't have to pick it out yourself - they've done all the work. It's a piece of cake and the exam will be as well, after this. As I've said before, practice makes perfect and if you're willing to put in the effort it always pays off. You will be well-prepared, as this is all the information and resources you need at the tip of your fingers, and once you've studied, it will be within reach for immediate recall during your exam. Over prepared is always better than under prepared - and under prepared is one thing you won't be after using this!

Eines der besten Bücher, die ich je gelesen habe ! Danke

Seit meinem 6 Lebensjahr begleiten Hunde mein Leben - mehr als 42 Jahre - als Freunde und sie waren immer ein wichtiger Teil davon. Dieses Buch vermochte meinen Blick auf diese Gefährten nochmals zu ändern, zu verfeinern, sie besser zu verstehen und sie als noch gößeres Geschenk in meinem Leben zu erkennen! Diese Buch zeigt uns viel wichtigere Dinge als wie unser Freund am besten “Sitz" beibringen ..... aber das tut es auch:) ! Es gibt nur wenige Bücher, die man im Leben liest und die unvergessen bleiben und Spuren im eigenen Leben hinterlassen- dies ist so eins!
