INTRODUCTION
International Rules
The International Rules in this book were formalized in the
Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions
at Sea, 1972, and became effective on July 15, 1977. The Rules
(commonly called 72 COLREGS) are part of the Convention, and
vessels flying the flags of states ratifying the treaty are bound to the
Rules. The United States has ratified this treaty and all United States
flag vessels must adhere to these Rules where applicable. President
Gerald R. Ford proclaimed 72 COLREGS and the Congress adopted
them as the International Navigational Rules Act of 1977.

The 72 COLREGS were developed by the Inter-Governmental
Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) which in May 1982 was
renamed the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In November
1981, IMO’s Assembly adopted 55 amendments to the 72 COLREGS
which became effective on June 1, 1983. The IMO also adopted 9
more amendments which became effective on November 19, 1989.
The International Rules in this book contain these amendments.

These Rules are applicable on waters outside of established navigational
lines of demarcation. The lines are called COLREGS
Demarcation Lines and delineate those waters upon which mariners
shall comply with the Inland and International Rules. COLREGS
Demarcation Lines are contained in this book.

Inland Rules
The Inland Rules in this book replace the old Inland Rules, Western
Rivers Rules, Great Lakes Rules, their respective pilot rules and
interpretive rules, and parts of the Motorboat Act of 1940. Many of the
old navigation rules were originally enacted in the last century.
Occasionally, provisions were added to cope with the increasing complexities
of water transportation. Eventually, the navigation rules for
United States inland waterways became such a confusing patchwork
of requirements that in the 1960’s several attempts were made to
revise and simplify them. These attempts were not successful.

Bing is angry with his father, a compulsive gambler who has one of the worst jobs in Vancouver's Chinatown: he collects the bones of Chinese immigrants' relatives and ships them back to relatives in China. Bing loathes the frightening, ostracizing work, so he is delighted when he finds a job as a houseboy in a wealthy home. Unfortunately, his employer's house has ghosts of its own, and Bing, with help from friends in Chinatown, must summon his pride and courage to pacify the antagonistic spirits, living and dead, in his community. A few lengthy ghost stories, unrelated to the plot, seem purposefully inserted. Still, the chilly details enhance the central story's suspense, and as in Dead Man's Gold and Other Stories (2002), Yee skillfully contrasts a strong sense of the supernatural with brutal, all-too-real racial prejudice and the haunted, unsettled yearning of immigrants longing for roots. Historical Chinatown, Ghosts and Growing Up

I loved this book. I read it with my 13 year old nephew over a weekend while he visited. Both of us were rivetted. The realistic view of a time and subculture I know little about, the rich story-telling and parallel ghost stories, the coming of age of this young boy, and the shifting relationship with his father, all made for excellent reading. I am eager to read more by this writer.

One of my favorites

I read this book over and over. It is mesmerizing. I also love sand which I collect. There is a lot I don't understand in the book. The woman is a total mystery. I would like to know what she is thinking sometimes. Another thing I don't understand is the water trap the man makes. Is such a thing physically possible?
I read another book called The Stones Cry Out by Hikaru Okuizumi. In it a Japanese soldier dying in the Philipines in WWII says "Even the most ordinary pebble has the history of this heavenly body we call earth written on it." I think this book reflects this idea too. Its just the nature of the world which is so mysterious. That big things can become grains of sand and little grains of sand can erode things and burry things.
I suppose that the man gradually learns to accept the true nature of the world and is then no longer unhappy.

Next time you're walking in the dunes....

This is one of those extraordinary, kafkaesque novels which gets right beneath your skin. On the surface, the story sounds faintly ridiculous. An insect collector goes off to the dunes in search of, well, insects, but ends up caught in a hole in the sand with no way of escape. To add an uncomfortable eroticism to the story he is stuck together with a woman who spends her days moving sand just in order to stop her home in the dunes becoming engulfed by sand. A pointless existence or symbolic of our routinized unthinking lifestyles? What follows shows incredible insight into human psychology. The man's will power, his wish to escape, battles with the temptation to resign himself to his fate and the woman. Whatever I write here I will not be able to give any idea of the agonizing psychological torture of this novel. It will leave you exhausted but amazed. For the brave only! And if you want more of the same, watch the film based on this novel. It is absolutely remarkable, and is one of the classics of Japanese cinema. I have never felt so shattered at the end of a film.

Sinking into the sands of psychology

Kobo Abe's heros are usually outsiders, and they also have a tendency to lose their way (for an interesting city-based version of Abe's lost hero, see "The Ruined Map"). These outer characteristics are clever reflections of the inner psychology of the hero, and nowhere are they more clearly described than in "The woman in the dunes". Led astray by his determined hunt for an original breed of insect, the hero finds himself hunted, and trapped in a strange village by the sea at the bottom of a sand shaft with no means of escape. At first his reaction to his captivity is disbelief - he assumes that being stuck at the bottom of a deep sand shaft as he is is some mistake, or some elaborate joke. When he realises this is not the case he focuses much of his venomous reaction on the hapless woman who lives at the bottom of the same shaft. Ironically, the more scorn he pours on her and the crazy world she lives in, the more he becomes adjusted to it in spite of himself. As he gives in gradually to his own new daily habits living at the bottom of the sand shaft, he enters into sexual relations with the woman. At first sadistic, even this form of contact with another person proves disturbing for our unsettled hero. Finally however, these relations become normalized and only when the woman becomes pregnant (and possibly miscarriages - though the writing does not make this explicit), does our hero accept his place in this new (weird) world. - Well that's a brief rundown of what happens, but what I can't explain is just how swiftly I found myself sinking into this book! It was just too strange at first to really grasp what was going on. Who are these people with no names? Why doesn't the woman even have a name? AND JUST WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE??? Excellent stuff - sci-fi fit for non-sci-fi fans (like me). READ.

The original title to this classic work was "Glimpses of Masonic History." This showed the author's purpose to demonstrate a direct connection between modern masonry and the ancient mystery religions. How well he made this case is up to the reader to decide. Personally, it is obvious to me that there is a golden thread connecting the traditions. This is most obvious at the level of the Occult School (as opposed to the "Authentic", Anthropological", and "Mystical" Schools.)

Leadbeater showed a remarkable knowledge of the Egyptian, Cretan, Jewish, Greek, and Mithraic mysteries. This is knowledge based not merely on a deep familiarity with ancient written source works and archeological finds (there are numerous photographic plates of these), but on the unconventional knowing of the clairvoyant. Leadbeater was considered one of the most distinguished clairvoyants of his day. You will find much here that is not included in more "scholarly" works. Needless to say, such knowledge is not varifiable to the satisfaction of most of the scientific establishment. Yet, this is not to say that it is in error.

The second half of the book covers the operative masonry of Medieval Times, and then the more traditional history of speculative masonry in the early 17th century. It ends with an examination of the Co-Masonic Order (a more metaphysical branch of masonry closely associated with the Theosophical Society, and which accepts both men and women.)

New insight

Most Masons of today will consider this book too metaphysical, yet as the author himself points out, there are at east three distinct kinds of Freemasonry, ie: social, mystical, and occult. He follows the thread of Freemasonry from earliest times to the present, a connection which many modern day Masons deny exists. It is true that the author was a noted clairvoyant and acquired much of his information from his own innate abilities. Nevertheless, year by year, more and more evidence keeps turning up that indeed shows the links that this man said were there. I think this book is very insightful and useful for the Freemason looking for the deeper meanings of his craft.

This is a book that should always be read in the context of other Leadbeater books. As with all esoteric writings, no one author has all of the truth and they are always beset with their own prejudices. That isn't to discount the things that Leadbeater discusses in the book, but this is the type of book that should only be read by those who are very serious about pursuing esoteric studies.
