About the Author
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra nació en Alcalá de Henares (España) el 29 de setiembre de 1547. Fue hijo de don Rodrigo Cervantes Saavedra (cirujano) y doña Leonor Cortinas. Tuvo seis hermanos. En 1551 se instaló con su familia en Valladolid y en 1566 en Madrid. Aquí asistió al Estudio de la Villa que regentaba el catedrático de gramática Juan López de Hoyos. En 1569 se incorporó a la milicia y dos años después combatió en la batalla de Lepanto contra los turcos (7/10/1571). Al quedar mal herido en un brazo lo apodaron «El manco de Lepanto». Cuando regresaba a España fue tomado rehén por los turcos durante cinco años (1575-1580). Al quedar libre regresó a Madrid y escribió su primera novela, La Galatea, publicada en 1585. Después trabajó como recaudador de impuestos en Sevilla, pero en 1597 fue encarcelado acusado de complicidad en un fraude bancario. En 1600 se instaló en Valladolid, donde terminó de escribir la primera parte de su gran obra El Quijote de la Mancha, que fue publicada en 1605. En 1613 publicó su colección de cuentos titulada Novelas Ejemplares. La gran aceptación de El Quijote de la Mancha hizo que publicara su segunda parte en 1615. Establecido en Madrid, cayó gravemente enfermo y falleció el 22 de abril de 1616. Las novelas ejemplares son las siguientes: El licenciado Vidriera, El amante liberal, El casamiento engañoso, El celoso extremeño, El coloquio de los perros, La española inglesa, La fuerza de la sangre, La gitanilla, La ilustre fregona, La señora Cornelia, Las dos doncellas y Rinconete y Cortadillo.

There are a few typos but nothing major. It's really nice to have the short stories separately so that you can search for something specific within the specific novella and not search the entire book of Exemplary Novels.

About the Author
After the first book appeared in 1880, Joel Chandler Harris was deluged with letters from readers all over the country asking for more stories of Brer Rabbit and his friends--so for the remaining years of his life he collected and wrote them. Richard Chase, noted folklorist and author of Jack Tales and Grandfather Tales, compiled and edited the volume after Harris s death, and his occasional footnotes and word definitions contribute to our understanding of the dialect. Chase s belief in the importance of folktales and Harris s work is summed up in his foreword: "These tales grew up in the soil of our nation. They came from the soul of a people. They endure."

He describes the engagements in McPherson Woods, at the Railroad Cuts, on Oak Ridge, on Seminary Ridge, and at Blocher's Knoll, as well as the retreat of Union forces through Gettysburg and the Federal rally on Cemetery Hill. Throughout, he draws on deep research in published and archival sources to challenge many long-held assumptions about the battle.

Gettysburg--The Second Day is certain to become a Civil War classic. What makes the work so authoritative is Pfanz' mastery of the Gettysburg literature and his unparalleled knowledge of the ground on which the fighting occurred. His sources include the Official Records, regimental histories and personal reminiscences from soldiers North and South, personal papers and diaries, newspaper files, and last -- but assuredly not least -- the Gettysburg battlefield. In particular, he illuminates Confederate lieutenant general Richard S. Ewell's controversial decision not to attack Cemetery Hill after the initial southern victory on 1 July. Pfanz also explores other salient features of the fighting, including the Confederate occupation of the town of Gettysburg, the skirmishing in the south end of town and in front of the hills, the use of breastworks on Culp's Hill, and the small but decisive fight between Union cavalry and the Stonewall Brigade.

It is just not possible to find better books, and a better writer

It is just not possible to find better books, and a better writer, of Gettysburg micro-history than Harry Pfanz. Yes, these books are NOT for the casual or new Civil War reader and they do require a good level of knowledge of both the War in general and the importance and context of Gettysburg within the War but, for the right reader, they both provide exhaustive detail and are highly readable.

For the true student of Gettysburg, they are must-reads.

Pfanz does a great job of getting to the nuts and bolts of the battle, with out getting mired in the minutia. This isn't to say that the books are without detail, they are, but the reader is not drown in them.

Enjoyable read to gain perspective

Karen Kingsbury's novel Divine is a modern-day retelling of Mary Magdalene's story and the contemporary demons she faces. She recounts her past of physical and sexual abuse, drug addiction and suicidal thoughts at an abuse shelter she runs.

The book is well written, except for a few parts where the story slowed or seemed redundant. However, the character development was excellent and completely realistic. The choices that characters make in light of their pained histories are believable, although traumatic.

The majority of the story is Mary telling her past to a woman who has left her abusive husband. Mary's history is darkly traumatizing and leads her down a dangerous path in life where only Christ could rescue her. However, Mary relives her past in order that another woman will be saved.

All of the characters involved in the book have gone through stressful patches of life. Kingsbury's characters are easy to connect with and the relationships developed between the various characters accurately show the ups and downs of living a life of abuse and a life lived in darkness.

Overall, the book was excellent. It is an inspiration for Christians to go out and minister to those who have led lives like Mary's. Mid-teens and older, especially women, would receive the most enjoyment from the book, in particular those who have suffered through abuse or those who know someone who is currently dealing with issues of abuse. However, it also just an enjoyable read to gain perspective through another person's eyes. - Molly Schnepel, Christian Book Previews.com

Truly Touching!

Divine by Karen Kingsbury is a truly touching novel about a woman whose terrifying abuse leads to a life of ministry. This book details how one life can alter the lives of many and Mary Madison's life does just that. Her life not only touches the other characters in the book, it also touches the reader. I found myself having to put the book down a number of times just so I could grab the tissue.

Spiritually, I found this book to be quite uplifting at this time in my life. It was refreshing to read about a person redeemed by Christ who didn't live the perfect life and who wants to reach others that have been damaged by sin. I get so tired of perfect characters, with perfect lives, who have nothing better to do than sit in judgment of everyone else. It was nice to read about a person who has sinned, who has been saved, and is out to do as Christ has called them to do ... not out of a sense of self-righteousness, but out of true love. The kind of love Christ has for us.

This is the third book that I have reviewed that is considered to be Christian fiction. I am finding that I really like this genre. Karen Kingsbury does an excellent job of reaching out to her readers through the lives of the characters she so beautifully creates. Divine, published by Tyndale House Publishers, really is Life-Changing Fiction. If you know someone who has been abused or is being abused, I would highly recommend giving them this book. Five stars!

In the DC area at one of her women's shelter, Mary Madison is briefed by her receptionist Leah Hamilton that her newest resident Emma Randall looks suicidal and ready to bolt. Battered and with no hope, the twenty-three year old Emma considers herself unworthy and ready to flee now that her two young children are safe from their abusive father Charlie. However, Leah softly gets Emma to meet with the legendary Mary while four years old Kami and two years old Kaitlyn play with dolls.

Mary shocks the frightened Emma by asking if she should like to hear her story not just the media account. Hesitantly Emma agrees so Mary explains how Jesus loved her and saved her. She was a little girl when her hooker mother took them to stay with her maternal Grandma Peggy who gives the little girl a purse with scripture inside. However, her mother immediately removed them back to the streets. When she scores a three day job with out of town Johns, her mom leaves Mary with her pimp; the last time they saw one another. From that moment Mary battled the seven demons that lead to sin and helplessness until she meets a believer who introduces her to Jesus.

This is a terrific modernization of Mary Magdalene living in Washington DC and using her story to encourage other people especially women that hope lies with Jesus. Mary's tale is told in flashbacks, which enhances how far she has come. Karen Kingsbury provides a deep character study of how one woman with help overcame seven contemporary demons (drugs, prostitution, etc.), but also makes no apologies that the author believes the path is with Jesus; readers who want a clear split between state and religion may find the religious message overbearing, but everyone will agree that Ms. Kingsbury provides an entreating parable starring a modernized Magdalene.

A few years ago, I read an article that described the forgotten baby syndrome. I'd never heard it named and labeled before, but I had--as so many of us--seen the terrible news coverage that followed the parent who happened to make the mistake of leaving an infant strapped into a car seat and gone on to work or school.

I had two reactions to these stories. My first one was: How could the parents have done this? How in the world do you actually forget that you have a child in the back seat?

My second reaction--once I realized how human we all are, how easily our minds lose information, how modern life is so distracting--was to wonder at how virulently angry people were at these poor parents that had done the unthinkable. No parent wants to do this, and yet, we who looked upon them wanted some kind of revenge. Maybe we were worried that it would happen to us. Maybe if we punished them, it would never happen again.

I mulled over this situation for a couple of years, and then I decided to see if I could write the story. My feeling is that Maricela and Matthew both exhibit reactions that I would have. One would be to escape and leave and try to imagine that it never happened. The other would be to stay and try to go on. Try to live. Hold on tight. Somewhere in the middle is probably the correct response, but how to get to that middle ground is also part of this novel.

Very Intense

"Forgotten" is a heart-wrenching story. The author tackled new territory and topics not found in a typical novel. I couldn't read it in one sitting; it was just too emotional.

Most of us have heard about a child found in a vehicle, and have wondered how it could happen. After reading the book, I did some research on the Internet. This tragedy happens across all walks of society. The common link seems to be busy and tired caregivers. Does that sound like anyone you know? The tragedy is so common that it even has a name - Forgotten Baby Syndrome! How would anyone cope with the guilt?

What is most disturbing is that the characters in this book start out as such a "normal" family. They could easily be your family or one you know. This book tackles the topic of how the unthinkable could have happened, and tells about a device available for prevention (an alarm).

If you are a visual person (the type of person who needs to leave things in the line of sight to keep them in mind) this book will chill you to the core.

Hopefully, public awareness will be raised by this book. If a child is saved because of a conversation started by this book, it makes it worth the read.

Note to the author - I was surprised to read you teach English. PLEASE read the entire book aloud and correct the errors before the next version is released. It's a great book, but the numerous errors were distracting.

Heartbreaking

Was it a pleasure to read this book? No. It was heartbreaking. Am I glad I read it? Yes. The author was amazing in the telling the of the tragedy that happened to this family. I wanted a happy ending but how could there ever possibly be a happy ending to this story? Or an ending at all? A tragedy of this nature can never be FORGOTTEN.

I would have given this book 5 stars but I knocked off 1 star because some odd mispellings of words ... like amp for map, or at least I assumed the word was supposed to be map. Also words misplaced in phrases, etc. Things like this knocked me out of the story because I was trying to figure out what the author meant to say instead of what was actually said.

I recommend this book but not for light reading. One thing for sure is that if you do read it, you will never forget it.

I didn't get too far into this book, but felt it had not been edited very well with lots of obvious errors. Also the subject matter of the book - the plot - though maybe this is something that happens too often in real life, was just too painful to read about. I was taken in by the cover of the book.
