"Smokey and the Fouke Monster" tells a most interesting and unusual true story of how the town of Fouke, Arkansas became the center of attention for Monster hunters in the early and mid-seventies but also, how this one mysterious creature's unwelcomed presence lead to the making of the now infamous movie "The Legend Of Boggy Creek". The book tells of the risks and pitfalls sometimes associated with the business side of life and how it came to pass that he and the town folk of Fouke found themselves having to deal with forces far more sinister than that of an unknown creature inhabiting their surrounding bottom lands.
This is a true story. The author actually did live next door to the Fouke Monster for several years.
The main purpose of this book is to keep the history of the Fouke Monster on a truthful basis. The true facts are told of what really went on behind the scenes during the filming' of a motion picture entitled "The Legend of Boggy Creek".

An Interesting Read
By Restless Bones
Probably most famous for his affiliation with the cult classic docudrama "The Legend of Boggy Creek," J.E. "Smokey" Crabtree was born into backwoods poverty during the 1920s in the vicinity of Fouke, Arkansas, and seems to have been a real-life 20th century incarnation of Huckleberry Finn in his youth. An expert woodsman from an early age, a welder by profession, and generally a jack-of-all-trades, Mr. Crabtree has had a life of small and large adventures. In this autobiography, he tells the reader in a direct and informal first-person manner about his life, his family, and some of the things for which he stands. Mr. Crabtree comes across as a decent fellow who is extremely, perhaps supremely, self-confident and somewhat eccentric. One is also left with the impression that he is relating the truth as he sees it. This is important because Mr. Crabtree is also one of a number of people around Fouke who have claimed to have had some experiences with an unidentified, bigfoot-like creature that has become known as the Fouke monster, which was also made famous by the movie "The Legend of Boggy Creek." Mr. Crabtree offers a lot of insight about the creature and about the movie which is at odds with what was shown in the film.
At 142 pages, the book is a quick read. Mr. Crabtree admits that he is not a writer. The writing style is rough. He writes as though he were speaking to the reader in person while both are sitting on his front porch or across from each other at his kitchen table. Rather than being a detriment, it is part of the book's charm.
This reader thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is interesting, informative, and entertaining. The book does not have a mass appeal, but it may appeal to many. I recommend it especially to those who enjoy listening to their elders speak about their lives and times. Anyone who enjoys reading about life in the South, Appalachia, or the Ozarks, should read this book. For anyone who has seen "The Legend of Boggy Creek" or otherwise has an interest in the Fouke monster, this book is a must read. Be aware that the book does not deal entirely with the creature. Mr. Crabtree discusses the creature and the movie at length beginning with page 85. Finally, anyone with an eclectic taste in reading material should also consider this volume.
From the internet, I have discovered that Mr. Crabtree has recently, or will soon, publish a sequel which updates his story from where the first book leaves off in 1974...

Smokey and the Fouke Monster is a fantastic book!
By Bill Miller
I have thought enough of Smokey Crabtree's books to have bought them for the local schools in my area to have in their libraries. While it seems unfortunate that they are now out of print on Amazon.Com ... I am happy to say that I know people are able to easily purchase these books at .......... WWW.Smokeyandthefoukemonster.com or they can email orders directly to Smokey Crabtree at Kimono11@Aol.Com
I honestly have enjoyed both of Smokey's books "Smokey and the Fouke Monster" and Too Close to the Mirror". If I ever had one book in my library or was to recommend one book to another person that stands out among the rest, it would be either one of these two books. Smokey's easy going backwoods way takes you right into the swamp bottoms that Smokey called home for so many years. Smokey's son's experience that resulted in the encounter the Fouke Monster, along with local town peoples sightings and involvements with the creature is spellbinding in itself, but the real value of Smokey's story goes beyond all that. Smokey tells of how greed over the almighty dollar became more important to some folks than the creature itself and how it turned neighbor against neighbor until Smokey was almost at the point of wishing he'd never heard of the Fouke Monster ever again. In my opinion, the lesson that one will learn through Smokey's true life story will outweigh the price of the book a thousand times over for most of us ... maybe even more for others.
Enjoy the book for you won't be sorry you bought it!

A Very Interesting Book!
By Brian E. Voncannon
I think that this book is really an interesting piece of work! In this book, not only does Smokey give you a good background on his up bringing, but he gives you his side of the story surrounding the Fouke Monster and the infamous "Legend of Boggy Creek" which he starred in during the early 70's.
I am familiar with Mr. Crabtree and he is a very interesting person to speak with. I recommend his book to anyone who is interested in the creature and true-to-life tales from days gone by.
